THE Council has taken over parking enforcement from the police, with council-employed staff issuing penalty charge notices to those parking illegally.
The Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) Officers can give out two levels of charge – a 'lesser offence' for example, overstaying at a parking meter or not parking in the lines in a car park, or a 'serious offence' for example, parking on a double yellow line or in a bus lane.
The penalty for a ‘lesser offence’ is £50 and for a ‘serious offence’ £70 with both fines discounted by 50 per cent if paid within 14 days.
To avoid getting a penalty, drivers are reminded to always check signs and road markings when parking and to make sure pay-and-display tickets or permits are displayed clearly, where appropriate.
